yahoo music engine! / aol bru ha ha

so yahoo music engine was released yesterday, all this hype about cheap online music service, etc. sounds great. they also mentioned xspf support, which is a big plus right?

well it seems that their xspf support is rather limited, you can apparently play an xspf only if it was sent via the browser into the program. also, to export xspfs it seems you need to be using a plugin that does music blogs to yahoo's webblog service?..

parts that i'm apparently missing?

1) i can't open an xspf from my local drive in yme
2) i can't open an xspf url directly in yme
3) i can't save my playlists i make in any format?

seems pretty weak right now in that playlist department.. however the yahoo unlimited (iTunes killer?, music subscriptions) seems to be creating a stir. i'm sure there will be more to write about later.

now onto the aol bru ha ha in the generated pls on winamp.com. Hidden is obviously to say to hide this entry in the player. it is used to hide the entry for the winamp splash (or bumper as they call it.) Curtain is the webpage being displayed when winamp gets this pls and splits the video area to show this page and links like "buy now" and "more information." it would also appear (tho it would have been guessed on prior) that winamp uses the microsoft browser control, and hence can have embedded javascript in Curtain keys.



there has been some commentary on this new "curtain" area (named differently by those not snooping the pls files) and how they want options to remove it. the easiest option is to get rid of that Curtain key in the pls, which you could easily do using a filter proxy like muffin.

i also have a muffin like utility that i am working on cleaning up for public consumption. this isn't exactly a priority project, but i'm going to weave it into another proxy i'm writing.. which should and will be grand for those who are in the know.
