a new year, a christmas past.. and the future

well, it's a bit late but happy new year. =)

got a couple cool things in december, some from xmas.. some my own inability to not buy things. got a microvault 512mb, which is good so i can tote around my work and projects between workstations and laptops. so in that regard it's utilitarian..

also got a coldheat solder tool, going to be trying that out soon. hopefully it's as cool as it is supposed to be.

got myself a gamepark holdings gp2x, came before i left for los angeles but i didn't have any time to fiddle with it then. now i've had a bit of time, played some video and music on it, got the sdl libraries installed and tested out a game (miss driller) so thats good. i bought the gp2x to be a cool little device to program games on (its linux based), so linux and sdl creates a quick system to develop games on (sdl not required, but makes things easier), as well as it being like a small gameboy like device (and targeted for homebrew).. very cool.

finally seeing an sdl game running on the device has gotten me excited about making my game (and having it port to the gp2x (which is a dual ARM based device btw))..

i've also gained an interest in writing an engine that supports cave story (wikipedia), by pixel (website (jp)) of which i'm starting to have a real respect and appreciation for. he programmed a music maker named ORG, and all the music in cave story are in ORG format. this past year he has been working on something called pxTone (pixel tone?) and has a copy up at his website (see above). it's truly amazing what he's up to in his spare time & i want to just recognize him for all the insane work he's done. it's truly awesome.

when i get a chance to update my website i'll probably have a little something about pixel and his programs ORG and pxTone, if you go off and look at what he does in pxTone you'll be impressed!

so it's working on xspf and gp2x games/applications for the first couple months of '06.. we'll see how it goes
